Protecting the "building envelope" During a "category five hurricane", sustained winds reach speeds of 155 m.p.h., however gusts of wind may reach 200 m.p.h. and over! Wind conditions this fierce can cause anything that is not sufficiently secured to become airborne .. loose roofing materials, trees, signs, pottery, possibly a neighboring home blown apart by the hurricane. The impact of this flying debris can destroy a window or a door and cause a breach in the "building envelope." This allows hurricane-force winds to enter the building. Within seconds a build-up of internal pressure virtually blows the roof off and the windows out.
When Hurricane Andrew stormed ashore in 1992 it brought with it over $30 billion in damages, more than any other storm in the history of the United States. While many homes protected by MetalTech panels "rode out the storm" with minimal or no damage, others with inferior products were virtually destroyed.
